In 2025, we saw an off-consumption liquor license appear on a resident’s wall. It caused great anxiety. Turned out it was for the admin of the business. The business itself was in Paarden Island. The problem was this was something new and took a while to get clarity.
Now in 2026, we have two new business areas with new buildings and new shops. We know to expect new liquor license applications, both off-consumption and on-consumption applications.
Late March 2026, a letter on intention to apply for an OFF-CONSUMPTION LIQUOR LICENSE appeared on the new Bowlers Way building site. It was published in the Tatler on Thursday 9 March. Two licenses were advertised in the Tatler in the same issue: one off-con for the Checkers Centre and one on-con for Founders Quarters. That date kicks of a 28-day public comment period: so closes Wednesday 6 May. When one contacts the Liquor Authorities, use this email address: Liquor.Enquiries@wcla.gov.za
When you email your comment, include PRRA and the Councillor: chair@pinelandsratepayers.co.za and Riad.Davids@capetown.gov.za

The video is a 35-minute attempt to unpack how we become aware of licenses, and how residents and businesses and organizations can comment: be it to object or support. Pause and rewind as needed.
Below is the flyer from the Western Cape Liquor authority to guide comments. It talks about objections, but similar ideas need to be considered whether objecting or supporting.
